Fishery Information

The Lake Fork of the Gunnison River is a truly special place to fish for large rainbow trout, brown trout, and the occasional Kokanee salmon moving out of Blue Mesa Reservoir to spawn in the fall.

Though none of these fish are native to Colorado, the Gateview Canyon stretch of the Lake Fork of the Gunnison is truly one of the best places for recreational angling in Colorado. The deep pools, large glides, and productive riffles make the last 5 miles of the Lake Fork of the Gunnison before Blue Mesa Reservoir a great place to fish. Around every corner you will pinch yourself about how fishy the habitat looks.

Rest assured, fishing in the Lake Fork is no cake walk, as it can be both extremely hot and extremely cold. When it is on, though, it is incredible. 50 fish afternoons are not out of the question if you know what you are doing and the fish are cooperating!

What fish you will find

Brown Trout
(Salmo trutta)
non-native

The body of a brown trout is generally brownish-yellow but can be highly variable across a broad spectrum. Spots on a brown trout are both black and red and are often concentrated on the upper half of the fish (i.e. above the lateral line). The tail fin is squarish (as opposed to forked) and typically lacks distinct spotting, a characteristic which differentiates it from some other trout (i.e. rainbow and cutthroat).

Rainbow Trout
(Oncorhynchus mykiss)
non-native

Rainbow trout are frequently easily distinguished by the faint pink rose-colored stripe that runs along their lateral line. The back is typically a blue-green color and covered with small black spots, including on the dorsal and tail fins. The belly of the rainbow trout can often be more silver-colored than the back, but not always. Juvenile rainbow trout often have vertically-oriented fainted blotches (called “parr” marks) within the pink along the lateral line, but don’t let that confuse you.

Trail Information

Brown trout and rainbow trout thrive in every pool!

From the Lake Fork Cutoff Road, head north on this dirt road (County Road 64) through Gateview Canyon. The road parallels the creek for approximately 5 miles, with several established restrooms along the road. You'll see plenty of fly fishermen back here and will need to watch out for cars, but it is a great place to combine running and fly fishing!
